RMK DESIGNSCUSTOM DESIGN FURNITURE POLICYThank you for your interest in RMK Designs custom furniture services. I have had over 20 years' experience designing and crafting furniture and would enjoy the opportunity to work with you on a special piece. The following are a few points on the advantages of custom furniture and my policy regarding the design and construction of your piece of furniture. PDF of my design policy can be seen here.Design benefits of custom handcrafted furniture:• Materials are handpicked for stunning wood grain. The ability to hand select lumber is a true advantage in design. • Where veneers are required they are hand sliced and glued to a stable furniture grade substrate. The advantages are a thicker veneer then commercially available which means they can be sanded and repaired if damaged in the future. • Attention to detail by a craftsman as the piece is being crafted. This assures the construction meets high standards. • The finishing process is done with longevity in mind. The use of several coats of finish with sanding in between coats assures a smooth and flawless finish that will last for many years. The type of finish applied can also be matched to the use of the piece. Over many years I have developed a design and construction process that has worked very well for my clients. The following is my procedure:• Initial meeting with the client to gather information on what he or she would like in the piece. We will talk about design elements, wood selection, as well as any other concerns. We will also work on hand drawn sketch of how the piece will look. • With the input from the client I will present a "ballpark estimate" for the piece. • Upon receiving a deposit of $100 I will start the design process and produce computer drawings showing the design as well as dimensions. Once presented to you via email or in person you will have the opportunity to review the drawing. If there are changes you would like to make I will modify the drawing until they meet your expectation. This deposit will be credited to the cost of the piece and will not be refundable if the client decides not to move forward with the piece. • 3D computer drawing is an option available to you. This option involves producing a 3 dimensional drawing which can then be rotated and flipped on the computer screen so you can get a better idea of how the design will come together. I can also apply different colors to replicate different wood species. • Once the design is final I will give you the final price at which time I will require a deposit to cover material cost. • Next construction begins. The turnaround time will vary from piece to piece and is dependent on current work load and other factors. The typical turnaround time is 4-6 weeks. • I will keep you informed about the progress of the piece and once the piece is built and finished I will contact you to arrange delivery. The following are examples of my design procedureThis is an example of the hand sketch process that I start with to get an idea of what you the client is looking for.
CAD Drawing is the second step. Here I provide a drawing which is drawn to scale meaning that the size of the parts are at the same proportion as the finish piece:
3D CAD Drawing is the next step and is an optional step at an additional cost. Some clients feel it is a helpful step in developing a better understanding of the finished piece. While viewing the piece on the computer the piece can be rotated and the drawers and doors opened. This is also a good way of comparing different colored woods:
